Novalja is the holiday-making centre
of the island of Pag, favourite destination of many
tourists. It is situated in a little inlet in the
north-western part of Pag Island. Beautiful sandy
and pebbled beaches which surround it give Novalja
a special attraction. The most attractive is the very
long and 100m wide pebbled beach Zrče near the pine
forest and the clear sea. It is a true pearl of the
Adriatic coast: magical colours, a coast full of capes
and coves that merge in the perfect blue and green
and the warm embrace of sea and stone in the magnificent
sunset. The mild Mediterranean climate, with all blessings,
will give you back all the freshness you need.
The historical roots of Novalja go far back into the
past, as witnessed to by many archaeological finds.
The ruins of the Roman aqueduct could be found in
a town called Cissa (the present hamlet of Caska)
in the surroundings of Novalja. Novalja developed
on the site of the ancient settlement Novalia which
represented the southern port of the Roman settlement
Cissa (today Caska). From the Roman times parts of
the aqueduct, several inscriptions and architectural
plastic forms have been preserved. In the early Christian
times there was a large basilica Urbana in the centre
of the town. Two decorated reliquaries were found
there: a bronze one from the 4th century and a silver
one, from a later period. Illyrian hill-forts, fort
St. Juraj going back to the late Antique period and
quite a number of early Christian chapels are one
of the many archaeological finds.
From the treasury of culture we particularly stress
the dance called NASKI that is performed in picturesque
folk costumes.
If you visit the island of Pag, surely you will not
leave it empty-handed. Like so many people from all
over the world you too will be captivated by the beauty
of the famous lace from Pag and some of the specialities
from the bountiful table, especially far-famed Pag
cheese and lamb, seafood specialities, and of course
good house wine.
